Australia Private House Approvals Rebound in September

Private house approvals in Australia increased by 4.0% month-over-month to 9,547 units in September 2025, recovering from a downwardly revised 1.0% drop in the previous month, preliminary estimates showed.

The number of house approvals was the highest since August 2022, driven by higher approvals in New South Wales (7.8%), South Australia (7.4%), Victoria (7.3%), and Western Australia (6.8%).

Queensland was the only state to fall, down 6.9%.

On an annual basis, private house permits were unchanged.

Private house approvals in Australia fell by 2.6% month-over-month to 9,027 units in August 2025, reversing a 1.3% increase in the previous month and matching preliminary estimates. The decline was driven by lower approvals in Victoria (-8.3%), New South Wales (-6.2%), and South Australia (-1.7%). In contrast, approvals rose in Queensland (2.9%) and Western Australia (1.7%). On an annual basis, private house permits declined by 3.5%, reversing a modest 0.1% increase in July.

The decline was due to lower approvals in Victoria (-8.3%), New South Wales (-6.2%), and South Australia (-1.7%). Meanwhile, approvals increased in Queensland (2.9%) and Western Australia (1.7%). On a yearly basis, private house permits dropped by 3.5%, reversing a downwardly revised 0.1% rise in July.
